Efforts Accelerated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gordion

September 6, 2024

A cooperation protocol was signed between the Ankara Development Agency and the Gordion Foundation to promote the heritage site further. The protocol, signed by Dr. Duhan Kalkan, Secretary General of the Ankara Development Agency, and Kadim Koç, Chairman of the Gordion Foundation, is expected to boost Gordion’s promotional activities. The upcoming efforts aim to promote the archaeological and natural assets of Gordion and its surroundings both national and international arenas, as well as raise local awareness.

As part of these activities, visitor information centers will be established, the Gordion Half Marathon will be held, and the International Gordion Arkeofilm Festival, which attracted 8.327 documentary films from 87 countries in its inaugural edition this year, will become an annual event. In addition to cultural, sports, and artistic events, efforts will be made to support rural development, meet accommodation needs, and activities will be carried out to brand local products.

The Legendary City of Gordion

Known as one of the most important archaeological sites of the ancient world, Gordion was the political and cultural capital of the Phrygians. Archaeologists describe the city as a magnificent stop on the "King's Road," and it is associated with many legends involving King Midas and Alexander the Great. The Gordion Citadel Mound is considered the most significant part of the archaeological site, as it houses the oldest known intact wooden tomb of the ancient world. The promotional efforts will continue for this invaluable historical and cultural heritage site.
