Angora Goat Breeding and Mohair Production Workshop Held
Within the framework of the “Anadoludakiler: 81 Provinces, 81 Products Programme”, coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Angora Goat was selected as the product to represent Ankara. As part of the “Product Analysis and Roadmap” study carried out by the Ankara Development Agency for the Angora Goat, the “Angora Goat Breeding and Mohair Production Workshop” was held in Kızılcahamam on 18 September 2026, with the participation of relevant public institutions, universities, civil society organisations and producers.
The workshop was attended by Mr. Sefer AKYER, Deputy Mayor of Kızılcahamam; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duhan KALKAN, Secretary General of the Ankara Development Agency; Prof. Dr. Necmettin ÜNAL, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ankara University; Mr. Faruk ERDEM, District Governor of Kızılcahamam; Mr. İsmail GÜLTEKİN, Deputy Governor of Ankara; and Ms. Zeynep YILDIZ, Member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for Ankara.
In his speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Duhan KALKAN, Secretary General of the Ankara Development Agency, emphasised the importance of the Angora Goat being selected as the product to represent Ankara under the “Anadoludakiler: 81 Provinces, 81 Products Programme” coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology. He stated that the recommendations put forward during the workshop would make a significant contribution to the development of the roadmap and that concrete steps were aimed to be taken accordingly.
Prof. Dr. Necmettin ÜNAL, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ankara University, highlighted the importance of scientific research in improving production processes and increasing productivity, and provided information on the breeding studies conducted by Ankara University on Angora Goats and mohair production.
Mr. İsmail GÜLTEKİN, Deputy Governor of Ankara, emphasised the importance of increasing both the quantity and quality of production in Angora Goat breeding. He stated that the necessary steps would be taken to further develop activities in this field and highlighted the importance of increasing promotional activities for Angora Goats and mohair production.
Ms. Zeynep YILDIZ, Member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for Ankara, drew attention to the importance of Angora Goats in terms of rural development and emphasised the importance of inter-institutional coordination and cooperation. Ms. YILDIZ also referred to the work being carried out by relevant institutions and organisations in the field of Angora Goats and mohair, highlighting the potential of mohair for use in different sectors and innovative applications.
During the workshop, the current state of Angora Goat breeding and mohair production was discussed under the headings of production and breeding, production infrastructure, mohair yield and quality, sustainability, producer organisation and rural development. The challenges encountered in production and breeding processes, current needs and proposed solutions were discussed in line with the views of stakeholders.
The information, views and recommendations put forward during the workshop constituted an important output for identifying the current state of the Angora Goat and mohair value chain, determining priority needs and shaping the roadmap.
